Professor John Woodcock, author of the book Tenby Shops 1870-1970, gave a very well-attended talk at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery on Friday.

The talk, entitled A history and description of Tenby Town Walls, took the audience on an historical perambulation around the historic fortifications of the town and John picked out interesting details and put them into a fascinating context.

He traced the history of the walls from the earliest times, via Jasper Tudor's Charter of 1457 which granted ownership of the walls and ditches of Tenby to the Mayor and Burgesses and examined the work undertaken on the history of the walls by two antiquarians, Edward Laws and, 100 years later, Gwyn Thomas.

John ended the talk by quoting from Psalm 48, 'Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts' which was apt for the evening and he thanked the audience for coming and also thanked the museum staff for their unending kindness.

The museum is having another talk, on the artist Ray Howard-Jones by Professor Tony Curtis on Friday, September 13.
