No fewer than 19 students from Pembrokeshire successfully auditioned this year for membership of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and the National Youth Theatre of Wales.

Pembrokeshire County Council's music co-ordinator, Chris Llewellyn, said the selection of the young people was a significant achievement not only for them, but for their teachers, the local music and theatre services and also the council.

"It particularly reflects the strength of schools music in Pembrokeshire," he added.

Students from Pembrokeshire also successfully auditioned for the National Brass Band and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

The successful students were:

National Youth Orchestra: Sarah Bowden (York University); Caryl Caffery (Trinity College of Music, London); Louise Haines, Jamie Hutchinson, Suzanne James, Laura Winstanley (all Greenhill School, Tenby); Katherine Haworth (Wells Cathedral School); Amy Howell, Sarah James, Rebecca John, Emma McCarthy, James Waygood (all Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest); Lowri Morgan, Nia Morgan (both Fishguard High School); Jonathan Tiller (Bath Spa University); Benjamin Ward (Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge).

National Youth Theatre: Claire Hovey (Netherwood School, Saundersfoot); Jonathan Oliver (Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest); Holly Sherringer (Pembrokeshire College).

National Youth Brass Band: Gemma Evans (Fishguard High School) and Derek Culley (Pembroke School).

National Youth Jazz Orchestra: Sharalyn Williams (Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest) and Leigh McGarvey (Milford Haven School).
