Four students from Pembrokeshire College have successfully achieved their ambitions - even though they never attended college! The students are part of an innovative teaching project that uses the latest mobile phone technology to promote distance learning. The loan of personal digital assistants (PDAs) and access to a personal tutor have allowed all of these students to complete their programme of work from home. Kirsty Blake from Narbeth, Tim Harrison from Pembroke, Matt Heggie from Saundersfoot and Steve Parkinson from Milford Haven all used their PDAs to search for jobs, write their CVs and letters of application, and - with the help of their mTutor - rehearse for their interview. As a result, Tim and Steve have secured summer jobs at Oakwood Theme Park and Kirsty has been accepted as a volunteer with The Prince's Trust. When Steve finishes his summer job he will become a full-time plumbing student at Pembrokeshire College. Kirsty also plans to become a student on the Access to HE course, which will be her first step towards achieving her ambition to become a social worker. "I've gained the confidence and skills to contact employers and go to interviews," said mLearner Matt Heggie, who is now working with Pembrokeshire County Council in their Department for Work and Pensions. "I've also had lots of help updating my CV and writing letters, which has meant I've been able to apply for better jobs. I would recommend the mLearning course to anyone under 25 who is unsure about their choice of career."
