'The Comfort of Repetition' is a stunning exhibition of sculpture and reliefs by Brinley Neil Stephens currently on show at Narberth's Oriel Queen's Hall Gallery. It was opened on Friday by Roger Moss, a well-known and respected sculptor who taught Neil 12 years ago when he was head of the sculpture department in Carmarthen (CCTA as it was then) Neil, a Llanelli boy ,went on to achieve a BA honours in Winchester School of Art and then to Cyprus College of Art where he was assistant to the principle, after having gained a post graduate degree and being artist in residence for a year. He was also a studio assistant to Sir Anthony Caro and Professor John Gibbons for a year, so his extensive studio practise has given him a sound background and helped him develop into a fine sculptor. He uses mostly steel because it suits his needs to express containment and its narrative with utilitarian function. Influenced by baskets, cages, abandoned redundant objects related to the experience of being on the coast, Neil has produced sculptures that are familiar, witty, handsome and superbly crafted. He has also produced some fine reliefs, some beautifully painted, and based on aerial views, and there are also delightful drawings that he says influence his sculpture, and are mostly from his imagination. The spacious gallery with the pale wood floor, is a lovely setting for this excellent exhibition, and it is such a rare treat to see sculpture of such calibre on display indoors that it is truly worth a visit for fellow artists and the public who do not often have this opportunity. It runs until September 4h and is open 10 am - 5 pm every day. Please telephone 01834 861212 or contact Lynne Crompton, the gallery manager for further information.
