A group of Pembrokeshire adult learners have graduated in the art of traditional wooden bow making.

The students have been taking part in an unique pilot course in Tenby.

The popular course, which was run by local bow maker David Hook, attracted around eight students each week and will resume with a new intake in September.

Meanwhile, the graduates of this year's course are hoping to move onto an intermediate course.

David, who lives in Lawrenny, has been making traditional wooden bows for 20 years. He started with an apprenticeship in medieval style English longbows and has since learnt to make other types of traditional bows from countries around the world.

Organised by Learning Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council's adult learning arm - the bow making course was aimed at both beginners and those with woodwork experience.

"My courses are tailored to cater for each individual's skill level and wood working ability," said David.

"Participants learn to make simple wooden bows from native timber, that can be completed fairly quickly, to constructing more complex designs that take longer.

"A basic knowledge of woodwork is helpful but is by no means necessary as those skills can be taught and all but the most complex designs require no special skills or tools. Patience is the most important aptitude."

The bow-making courses have been organised by the Tenby Community Learning Centre based in Greenhill Avenue.
