ELEVEN students from the West Wales School of Arts, Carmarthen, have been chosen to show their work in the Oriel Queens Hall Gallery, Narberth, to give an overall representation of the annual graduate show that was on in June this year. Prints, etchings, lithographs and monoprints, from first year students are on display on the stairs, and in the main gallery you will find painting, photography, drawing and a wonderful moving installation called 'Memcrem'. This deals with memory, death, emotion and transformation. Sally Greiner, who has won an award and will be 'artist in residence' in the college this year, has created beautiful sculptures using wire wool and then filmed them slowly burning with a background of soulful music. Another mature student, Brendan Tierney has used his experience of working in industry to create large powerful works in charcoal and in mixed media, and in contrast Charlotte Loweth, a second year student from Narberth, has painted small vignettes of children absorbed in their world of dressing up. Audrey Searle's series of photographs called 'Outside In' are delightful studies of reflections, a dewdrop on a line, a spider's web, the rim of a glass, black and white photography lending itself so well to these stunning images. Lee Odishow has three wall sculptures on show, using bronze and steel to make completely different pieces that are witty and beautifully made. Hazel Morris has used rich colours in her paintings of a child in various situations, theatrical and quite disturbing, and Heather Reid's well executed designs in embroidery of corsetry and the historic implications are yet another aspect of this fascinating and varied show. This is a good opportunity to see what is happening in art colleges and a welcome addition to the programme of excellent shows at Oriel Queens Hall Gallery, Narberth. The exhbition runs until October 9 and is open 10 am - 5 pm most days apart from Mondays.
