Pembrokeshire's GCSE results this year have continued to show improvement.

The percentage of pupils achieving WJEC grades A*-C is 67.1 per cent, up from 66.1 per cent last year and above the Wales average of 65.4 per cent.

The percentage of pupils achieving grades A* or A grade is 18.9 per cent.

The A*-G percentage pass rate in Pembrokeshire (WJEC results only) is 99.4 per cent.

Pembrokeshire County Council's head of school effectiveness, Martin Lloyd, said: "Overall provisional results from each of Pembrokeshire's eight secondary schools show that results are on the whole continuing to improve, with significant improvement in some schools.

"It is encouraging that the hard work of schools is continuing our upward trajectory."

Clr. Huw George, cabinet member for children, young people, learning and Welsh language, said: "Today is a milestone for our young people and I congratulate each individual student on their success.

"Many will be returning to continue their studies and some will be starting work or taking up apprenticeships. Parents should be rightly proud of their children's results.

"I also acknowledge the hard work of teachers and the local authority who have worked well under increased expectation."

Greenhill

Jan Kingston, headteacher of Greenhill School, Tenby, said: "We are delighted that 2012 is proving to be a very successful year for Greenhill. As well as our 50th anniversary celebrations plus some superb A-Level results last week, we continue our good run with some of our best ever GCSE results.

"We have made huge improvements with our 'maths strategy' resulting in 69 per cent A*-C grades, a leap of more than 14 per cent, along with English at 74 per cent A*-C and science at 67 per cent A*-C giving us a core subject indicator of 58 per cent - up 11 per cent from 2011.

"The percentage of students gaining five or more GCSEs at A*-C grades is 74 per cent - an improvement of more than 13 per cent on last year.

"Our Level 2 threshold is 83 per cent with Level 2, including English and maths at 65 per cent.

"We had some stunning results with Tom Prestwich gaining 9A* and 2As, Samara Hicks 9A* and 1A, Kate Phillips 4A* and 6As, Lewis Brickle 8A* and 1A, Hazel Scourfield 4A* and 5As. A special well done to Elinor Wainwright, who was diagnosed with leukaemia early this year, for gaining 2As, 4Bs and 1C.

"Congratulations and well done to all our students! A big thanks to all staff for their hard work and to all our parents for their support."

Dyffryn Taf

Dyffryn Taf School, Whitland, has achieved excellent results in this year's GCSE examinations. In fact, the five A*-C grades achieved by pupils represent the best results ever achieved by the school.

Said headteacher, Mr. Robert Newsome OBE: "We feel that the partnership between pupils, parents and teachers has contributed to this success and the dedicated effort by pupils has been justifiably rewarded.

"The introduction of a more appropriate curriculum for the 21st century has offered focused career pathways for students and they have responded positively to this. The range of subjects at Dyffryn Taf highlights a blend of academic and vocational subjects on offer and meets the needs and aspirations of our students.

"Whilst the vast majority of pupils have achieved their potential, the following results show the depth of talent at Dyffryn Taf: Charlie Kind - 11 A*, Richard Phillips - nine A*, Phoebe West - eight A* and Morwenna Jones - seven A*."

COMMUNITY LEARNING

Once again excellent results have been attained by students attending GCSE classes at Tenby and Pembroke Dock Community Learning Centres.

Special praise must go to Angela Mills who achieved an A* in mathematics and Richard Reed who has maintained the centres 100 per cent record by achieving a grade A in French.

Thanks to tutor Scott Hammond and Chantal Court for all their hard work and support. Anyone wishing to emulate their success should contact Tenby or Pembroke Dock Community Learning centre for details of next year's courses or go to our web site:
