Sir, On reading the Tenby Observer, I notice a couple of walking groups send in a report each week, so I thought you might like to hear about The Saundersfoot Strollers - a walking group set up by myself in November 2014 for a few friends, which has now grown to over 20 in number. Recently, in the Daily Mail newspaper, there was an article about how important a 'walk with friends is, being the path to good health', highlighting that the social interaction of the group is so beneficial in reducing the risks of life-threatening illnesses. Our walking group meets every Tuesday morning, covering an average of five miles, ending up in a café or pub for well-earned refreshments. This has become a big part of all group members' lives. Off-shoots have grown as a result of the walks in that we have now got thriving music, art, French, craft, weaving, and coffee groups who meet regularly, using the talents of our group members. Last Tuesday, we enjoyed a fantastic five-mile walk (approx), starting at St. Clears and following the fairly new Wales Coastal Path to Laugharne. Though a little muddy in places, we had fantastic weather, with fine views over the rolling Carmarthenshire countryside. Refreshments were enjoyed at The Owl and Pussy Cat Cafe in Laugharne. The attached photo is of the group, on one of the raised boardwalks on the route. I think our group very much encapsulates the points raised in the Daily Mail article, not just because of the health benefits of walking regularly, but also because of the other activities happening alongside it. The Strollers raised £920 last summer for Breast Cancer Care, through a sponsored walk, and this year we are doing a sponsored walk for the RNLI (Saundersfoot branch, of which I am a member) for the Yellow Welly Day on May 5. We try to observe all 'National Days'. We recently held an hilarious 'Hat and Poems' day for National Wear a Hat, and National Poem at Work Day, and also on National Carrot Cake Day one of the group made a lush carrot cake for us all! We will obviously be observing St. David's Day on the nearest Tuesday to March 1, i.e. March 3. We have a poet in our group, so most weeks she produces a very entertaining poem, pertaining to the walk that we have done. So all in all, a very cheerful group of Saundersfoot Strollers!
