An item found on one of Tenby’s beaches, believed to be ordnance from a World War II?sea mine, has been collected by the Ministry of Defence after it was discovered by a member of the public on Thursday (February 18).
Local resident Michelle Smith took to Facebook to post photos of the item found on Paragon beach near to rocks, which had been seemingly uncovered due to the recent stormy weather.
Michelle confirmed that the ordnance was around 2 inches in length and just over half an inch wide.
“The police have it placed in Tenby police station car park, and the bomb squad have been called,” she said on Thursday afternoon.
“I am glad I moved it to be honest as there were children running around the rocks close to where I found it!
“The police have the location of where I found it for further investigation. There were metal poles and all sorts littering the beach. The storms have turfed up a lot of stuff,” she added.
Responses to Michelle’s Facebook post suggested that the ordnance was an impact detonator or a contact horn off a mk17 British bouyant mine .
Today (Friday) a spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “At around 5.30 pm yesterday (Thursday, February 18) a member of public attended Tenby Police Station with a small piece of suspected ordnance found on the beach. The item was collected by the MoD this morning.”
