Eight people were evacuated from four properties in Tenby last Thursday evening after a four-storey-high gable wall at St. Mary's Court in St. Mary's Street showed signs of movement in the high winds.

Shortly after 6 pm, one person was evacuated from a flat at St. Mary's Court, two people from a neighbouring house, one person from another neighbouring house, and four adults from Myrtle House Hotel across the road.

The residents of St. Mary's Court and houses found alternative accommodation with friends and relatives, while the people from Myrtle House Hotel were taken to Tenby Leisure Centre until temporary accommodation could be arranged.

The evacuation was carried out by officers from Pembrokeshire County Council and Dyfed Powys Police. Council officers also took the decision to close St. Mary's Street. The road was however re-opened on Friday afternoon.

St. Mary's Court is surrounded with scaffolding and building works are in progress. Works to date include part removal of roof coverings and parapet wall.

It was not possible on Thursday to inspect the gable end wall and scaffolding due to the severe weather conditions.

On Friday, officers carried out a structural assessment of the building and met with scaffolders and scaffold designers. Additional bracing was added to the scaffolding to minimise concerns.
