Standing on Amroth beach in the blazing sunshine, the azure sea twinkling behind me, it seems hard to believe that visitor numbers to Wales dropped by quarter of a million last year. Are they not seeing what I can see? It's just so beautiful in Pembrokeshire at this time of year. I was on the beach to launch Kiss 4 Life with the Royal Life Saving Society, it's a scheme that aims to teach children beach safety and resuscitation skills. We had children from Tavernspite and Laugharne primary schools who enjoyed watching life saving demonstrations in the sea by the Welsh Life Saving Society and who then took part in workshops on the sea wall conducted by the RLSS. Seldom can children have been taught in more beautiful surroundings. Luckily for us the weather was perfect and looking at the photos afterwards you would be forgiven for thinking we were in the south of France, not South Pembrokeshire. Two exciting developments are taking place in the tourism business in our county this summer - the opening of Bluestone in Canaston Woods and the re-opening of Manor House Leisure Park near Tenby. I know Bluestone has been a controversial development, but whatever you think of it, it's here to stay now and it will have positive knock-on effect on many smaller tourism operators. The takeover of Manor House by TV star Anna Ryder Richardson is a welcome celebrity shot in the arm for the area. Tourism in South Pembrokeshire has never stood still, but these developments make for an exciting season.
