The Store Mart at Whitland on Saturday, September 20, saw a good entry forward with trade in line with the national average and grazing cows levelling at £586, which equates to 95.91ppk. Top price per kilo was 133p for a 640 kilo Limousin from G. Phillips, Brynglas, Johnstown. Grazing cows peaked at £890 for a 840 kilo Welsh Black from Morgans and Cook, Park View, Trevaughan. G. Phillips attracted other leading prices, including £850 and £825 apiece for two 640 kilo Limousins.
Overage steers made up to £740 for a 560 kilo Limousin from Davies, Waungaled, Peniel, who also sold a 530 kilo Limousin at £680 and a 550 kilo Limousin at £680.
Topping the overage heifers at £675 was a 470 kilo Charolais from Thomas, Trefin, Llandeilo.
An excellent entry of 566 store cattle sold to a particularly brisk trade with heifers selling to an average of £499 whilst steers averaged £569. Top price steer realised £928 for a Limousin from Richards, Clawddu Farm, Tycroes, and heifers sold to £855 for a Limousin from John, Pensarn, Login. Bulls sold to a top price of £640 for a Limousin from Davies, Waungaled.
An entry of 50 suckler cows included a special consignment from Messrs. Griffiths, Llambed Farm, Mathry, which drew many to the ringside and resulted in a top price of £1,205 for a Limousin cow and calf and also sold at £1,095, £990, £970, £965, £955, £955, £935.
In addition to the suckler cows, Messrs. Griffiths sold bulling heifers to a top price of £555 (x2) and £540 (x2). Their in-calf heifers sold to a top of £815 with others selling at £745, £750, £700 and £695. Other leading prices included Davies, Glandy Bach, Efailwen (£1,190), Morgan, Penygraig Bungalow, Llanddowror (£975) and Rowlands, Glenfield, Llanddewi Velfrey (£945).
