As evidence of dangerous climate change mounts, a leading environmental organisation is urging people to raise the issue at the forthcoming general election and also to take actions in their own lives to combat the problem. Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth is calling on people to contact their parliamentary candidates to ask them to support legislation that would result in year-on-year reductions in carbon dioxide, which is the main gas causing climate change. The legislation already exists in the form of the Climate Change Bill that Friends of the Earth recently introduced to parliament. Friends of the Earth spokesperson, Gordon James, said: "Although politicians are beginning to recognise that climate change is one of the biggest threats that we face this century, their response has been mainly one of paying lip service rather than taking action. "Official figures recently released show that emissions of carbon dioxide in the UK have increased over the last two years at a time when they should have been decreasing." The environmental organisation points to a considerable amount of scientific research that shows that the situation is more worrying than previously considered. A recent international conference at the Met Office in Exeter, for instance, warned that a significant rise in sea levels, the shutdown of the Gulf Stream and the dieback of the Amazonian rainforest are now regarded as increasingly likely if we fail to stabilise and reduce 'greenhouse' gas emissions in the near future. As well as calling on politicians to do more, Friends of the Earth is urging individuals to take more responsibility in their own lives. One of the recommendations they make is for people and businesses to switch to 'green' electricity that is generated from clean sources such as wind, water and solar power rather than from polluting fossil fuels. Businesses that do this do not have to pay the Climate Change Levy on their electricity bills. This, they say, can be done in a few minutes simply by contacting a 'green' electricity supplier. Details of the suppliers recommended by Friends of the Earth can be found on the climate page of their website at http://www.foe.co.uk">www.foe.co.uk, the Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth web site at http://www.foepenfro.org.uk">www.foepenfro.org.uk or by writing to the local Friends of the Earth office, c/o Span Arts, Town Moor, Narberth. Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth will be writing to all the local parliamentary candidates to ask whether they would support the Climate Change Bill.
