J. J. Morris, Auctioneers report a packed ringside at Whitland Mart on Saturday, May 31, for the sale of 101 suckler cows and calves drawn from the beef cattle herd of Mr. and Mrs. A. Cole, Pembroke. Bidding peaked at £1,800 (twice) for Belgian Blue cows and their bull calves selling to Messrs. Davies and Millichap, Tonyrefail and Messrs. F. G. Goodall, Llandovery. Heifers of other breeds, all with their Belgian Blue calves, sold to £1,640 (Limousin), £1,550 (Blonde d'Aquitaine), £1,520 (Charolais), £1,320 (Welsh Black) and £1,200 (Hereford). Twenty-seven in-calf Blonde d'Aquitaine and Belgian Blue cross cows and heifers sold to £1,380 and 24 bulling heifers made up to £940. The three Belgian Blue bulls on offer made up to £2,020 for a four-year-old Ridgedean bred bull. Sale averages: cows and calves - £1,117; In-calf cows and heifers - £811.50; bulling heifers - £667.50; bulls - £1,720.
