Many people may have had mixed feelings about the heatwave, but the 22 members of the Steps2Health group who met up on Saturday at Lydstep Headland enjoyed a walk well away from crowded streets on the clifftops where a gentle breeze made conditions more bearable (writes B.S.).

But a leisurely pace was advisable with such high temperatures as the walkers set off down the lane leading to Lydstep Headland. At the junction, the footpath to the right provided lovely cool shade beneath the trees, the short path leading to the viewpoint afforded a Mediterranean style vista of Skrinkle Haven with its clear blue calm water.

At the fork, those opting for a slightly longer walk led by Brian, backed up by Val, took the more rugged path along the cliff edge. Erica's group, with Janice in support, took the steady walkers along the higher, but flatter path. Both paths afforded spectacular views and plenty of butterflies to be seen.

After posing for Brian to take a photo, the final section led through the cool shade of the woods. But it was not only the walkers thankful for some shade. The way was barred by cows blocking the path! But walks leader Erica rose to the occasion and, helped by Marina, the cows were politely, but firmly persuaded to move aside and let the walkers pass!

But it was complete relaxation at the end of the walk as the group enjoyed tea, coffee or cold drinks on the restaurant verandah at Celtic Haven. Comfortable chairs shaded by large sunshades and overlooking the sea made the walkers linger on a long while.

One can but hope for similar weather tomorrow (Saturday) when a second attempt is made to get to Caldey Island. Be in Castle Square in good time for the 10 am boat! It might be prudent to take sunhats, suncream, insect repellent and a bottle of water.
