Christmas may only have been a few weeks away, but well over 40 Steps2Health walkers turned their backs on hot and crowded shops in favour of a peaceful, albeit muddy walk in Dylan Thomas country (writes B.S.).

Val Coates-Rees had driven a full minibus to Laugharne where many more walkers were waiting in the car park of the church.

Walks leader Gill Cole announced that, owing to the treacherous mud, the five-mile extension walk for the very fit was being abandoned in favour of a shorter circular walk for all.

Fortunately, walks leaders Barbara, Margaret, Val, Janice, Lyn and Andrea were also on hand as some of the group needed a reassuring arm to guide them over the more slippery parts.

But first of all, respects were paid at the final resting place of Dylan Thomas. Because of the utter simplicity of the white cross it stands out clearly in the hillside cemetery.

Our way then led along a very muddy lane and it was with some relief we reached the outskirts of the town. It was then down to the main car park, over the bridge and along the path under the castle. Although a typical December morning had gently misted the estuary, it was still a beautiful sight.

Quite a steep climb up to reach the famous writing shed and then along past the Boathouse. Eventually we turned left to access the holiday park where teas and coffee were enjoyed in the clubhouse. During this sociable break, it was agreed that a collection for the Salvation Army would be made at the Christmas lunch rather than exchanging Christmas cards.

Although rain had now set in, it was still a pleasant walk back along the main road to the minibus and cars.

Tomorrow (Saturday), we look forward to Christmas dinner at Wiseman's Bridge Inn. For those wishing to walk to Wiseman's Bridge from Saundersfoot, the Silcox 352 leaves from outside Sainsbury's 10.30 am.
