Manorbier is justly famous for its magnificent castle, ancient church and spectacular coastal scenery but, on Saturday, the Steps2Heath walkers discovered a more hidden side to this village (writes B.S.).

Walks leader Lyn Evans had done his homework well and so decided against taking the 44 walkers along the coast path owing to muddy and wet conditions after the heavy rain.

So, for most of the walkers, it proved to be an intriguing ramble down a country lane that few knew existed. Starting point was at the castle gates and from here Lyn led the way across the road to pass in front of Castle Mead Hotel. The lane soon became a good old-fashioned country footpath with three stiles to clamber over. As they were usually high, there was some laughter, but fortunately no mishaps.

It was then across an open field - with some puzzling stretches of asphalt - which brought us to the play area of Skrinkle estate. A downhill walk led us back to the village centre and refreshments. But a large number opted to carry on a little further to tread a very ancient and historic 'funeral path', before returning to the cafe.

Many were also tempted into the Craft Fayre to enjoy refreshments and buy plants and homemade jam. Certainly plenty of interest in Manorbier.

Tomorrow (Saturday), we head off to yet another historic and beautiful place, St. Davids.
