Some 30 members of the Steps2Health group set sail for Caldey on Saturday, probably one of the warmest and sunniest days of July, but it was still a lively crossing and so did not disappoint those who like to feel the wind in their hair and the spray on their face (writes B.S.).
Before heading for the main trail, Mo Crockford suggested a slight detour which gave walkers the chance to stand at the foot of The Calvary and to climb the steps to experience the serenity of the tiny watchtower.
On past the guest house and then up the long path to the lighthouse, but well worth the climb as we were soon revitalised by the sea breeze and panoramic views stretching from Worms Head to St. Govan's Head, and not forgetting Preseli Top rising up in the far distance behind The Esplanade.
It was then downhill, taking in the ancient St. Illtud's Church and chocolate factory. A break for refreshments on the sunlit lawns outside the cafe, a browse in the shops and then a woodland walk to enjoy more stunning vistas across to the mainland. Although all the walkers came through unscathed, Penny Evans did have the opportunity to delve into her first aid kit to bring relief to a holidaymaker who had been bitten by an unidentified flying insect.
So much to do and see on this special island and for one walks leader, a swim was a must. Val Coates-Rees did actually swim from Tenby to Caldey on one occasion. On Saturday, she did however, return by boat.
And on the return trip, we were all very well looked after by a member of the crew. Poppy, a very friendly collie, took it upon herself to circulate the passengers, sitting by most of them in turn to make us feel we were very welcome aboard.
A fitting end to a most enjoyable outing.
Tomorrow (Saturday), walkers are reminded to wear sturdy footwear for a walk at Lawrenny. Drivers meet approximately 11 am at Lawrenny Quay. To find out if there are any vacancies on the minibus leaving from outside Sainsbury's at 10.30, ring Val Coates-Rees on 843951.
