There may have been a bitter wind blowing up the estuary giving little cheer to the swans brooding on the frozen stretch of water, but the usual convivial atmosphere prevailed amongst the Steps2Health walkers on Saturday (writes B.S.).
Walkers had arrived at Neyland Marina by minibus and car together with walks leaders Janice Tooth, Gill Cole, Barbara Morris and Val Coates-Rees. In spite of the somewhat dismal weather, it was a large group, including newcomer Yvonne.
Those wishing for a longer walk went on ahead with Janice and Barbara, not put off by warnings of muddy conditions, some steep inclines and the hazard of exposed tree roots.
The rest followed at a slightly more leisurely pace along the scenic pathway, once the route of the railway track to Rosemarket. Time taken to observe the robin perched on the bramble bush and toss stones on the water to confirm it had, indeed, frozen over.
The group on the other side of the river were fortunate enough to spot a heron.
After an hour's exercise, it was time to all pile into the riverside cafe where lunch or just a coffee could be enjoyed alongside a good chat.
Also time to peruse the programme for the next few months, which promises a variety of coastal, country and town walks.
Tomorrow (Saturday) meet outside Somerfield at 10.30 am for a town walk. All welcome.
