A lovelier setting could not have been chosen for Saturday's Steps2Health walk. The weather, too, was perfect as the walkers arrived by cars and minibus at St. Govan's to enjoy a good hour in a landscape where the centuries blend together in an easy harmony (writes B.S.). From the ancient St. Govan's chapel, across clifftops free from commercialism to the lilyponds fashioned by the Earls of Cawdor, the walk, led by walks leader Margaret Lewis had aspects that were a delight from every angle. It was good to hear that regular walkers Janice Tooth, Penny Evans and Jill Cole have now 'graduated' to being volunteer trained walks leaders. With more help to hand, the walkers were able to split into two groups, each with its own leader and backmarker and someone in the middle as well! After crossing Broadhaven beach, group one took the far path around the lilyponds giving themselves an extra threequarters-of-a-mile. Group two were happy to take the nearside path and, under no pressure, take time to observe a cormorant gulping down an unfortunate eel. Primroses, violets, campion and bluebells lined the path and wild garlic gave a snow effect. On arriving at Bosherston's Olde Worlde Cafe, the latecomers did try to convince those already drinking coffee that they had done a detour round Stackpole Head! Relaxing in the sunny tea garden, it was the sort of day one wants to go on forever. Some drivers did extend the outing by then going on a little further to see the guillemots covering Stack Rocks. The bird world equivalent of a high rise block of flats? Tomorrow (Saturday) meet outside Somerfield at 10.30 am for a local walk.
