Gale force winds, red flags warning of danger and sentries on duty all combined to engineer a change of route for Saturday's Steps2Health walk (writes B.S.). Not withstanding the gloomy weather forecast, 30 diehards gathered at Penally station car park. However, walks leader Val Coates-Rees had to announce a change of route. Apart from the red flags, there would have been the danger of the more lightweight walkers being blown off the cliffs at Giltar! Not the conditions for tackling the coast path. But Val's alternative route still proved to be a challenge as we took the strong east wind head on to battle our way across the South Beach to the Kiln Park gap. What a relief to leave the beach and step into much calmer conditions. Then it was over the railway bridge to cross the golf links back to the by-pass. Now we could relax sufficiently to try and focus on the heron spotted by Lyn Evans. Wind and rain were completely forgotten as, finally, we gathered in the cosy warmth of the Cross Inn to enjoy a sociable time over coffee and biscuits. Tomorrow (Saturday) meet outside Somerfield for a local walk starting at 10.30 am.
