It was off to the peace and tranquillity of Lawrenny for the Steps2Health walkers on Saturday (writes B.S.). And what a crowd it was that invaded the shores of Pembrokeshire's secret waterway! No less than 42 walkers made this a record number for the Tenby group. We welcome some visitors and it was also good to see some familiar local faces joining us for the first time. The minibus that Val Coates-Rees had manoevered so adroitly through the narrow winding lanes had carried a full load. The overflow had been found places in cars and some walkers had driven direct to Lawrenny Quay, the starting point for the walk. But, first of all, we all converged on the riverside cafe to enjoy refreshments and a chat. Walks leader Margaret Lewis read out a text from Barbara Morris sending her greetings from sunny London. We may not have had any sunshine at Lawrenny, but it was ideal walking weather. Margaret led us back to the road and then we followed the public footpath. The uphill walk was amply rewarded as we came clear of the trees to see the broad and placid waterway spread out below us. If anyone needed to get their breath back they had an excellent excuse to stand a while to admire this scene of peaceful beauty. A view once enjoyed by the occupants of the now demolished Lawrenny Castle. Most of the walkers took the opportunity to have a look inside Lawrenny church, dedicated to St. Caradoc. The beauty of the magnificent stained glass window impressed everyone. We then followed Margaret back to the quay along the road with Lyn Evans and Val also 'on duty' to keep eyes open for traffic hazards. It was with reluctance that we left behind Lawrenny, so peaceful yet alive with sailing activity. The starting point for our walk tomorrow (Saturday) is New Hedges. Do join us outside Somerfield 10.15 am to catch the Silcox bus at 10.30 am.
