A new initiative promoting the health benefits of walking with the very young has been marked by a walk along the Cleddau. A group of parents with their young children stepped out from Neyland Marina to highlight the initiative, which encourages parents to take their young children with them when they go out walking. The leaflet, 'Walking with Babies and Toddlers', was launched earlier this month, highlighting three routes suitable for families and young children in the Pembrokeshire countryside. Led by Steps to Health walk leaders, the parents and children strode out along one of the routes from Neyland to Westfield Pill nature reserve. "We know that walking, like many physical activities, has huge benefits and starting this habit at a young age gives children a positive message about living an active life," said Clr. Sian James, Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for health and social well -being, who accompanied parents on their walk. "It can also help parents by improving physical fitness, aiding relaxation and sleep, lifting mood and raising self-esteem as well as allowing them to meet other parents." The new leaflet has been produced by Pembrokeshire Greenways together with the NHS in Wales and the Pembrokeshire Local Health Board. Copies can be obtained from health centres and playgroups. It can also be found on the Greenways website below. Pembrokeshire Greenways works to improve access to the Pembrokeshire countryside.
