A Year 6 pupil from Stepaside School has won an award for designing an 'anti-drink and drive' poster as part of a competition run in conjunction with Dyfed Powys Police and Pembrokeshire County Council. Jacob Phillips won the junior category for the competition run throughout schools in Pembrokeshire. His poster design featured the heading 'A Sobering Thought' over a grave with the words 'a drunk driver' inscribed on the tombstone. PCC road safety officer, Mrs. Janette John, who presented Jacob with the award, commented on how impressive the entries in the competition all were. "We received a number of well thought-out poster designs for the campaign, with Jacob's particularly standing out because of its hard-hitting message combined with such a clever colourful design," she said. "Hopefully, posters like the one Jacob has conceived will get the important message across to drivers this Christmas not to drive when they've been drinking." All the children who came first in their categories in the competition were presented with their awards at Dyfed Powys Police headquarters in Carmarthen on November 19, where they also enjoyed a tour. Pupils from Stepaside School also took part in a spot of fund-raising recently when they staged a sponsored disco, raising a total of £1,400 towards the school mini-bus fund. "We'd like to thank all who took part in organising the event, and especially all the mothers and fathers who helped with the sponsorship," said the school's headteacher, Mr. Peter Griffiths.
