Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with Dyfed Powys Police are promoting the 'Fireworks for Fun not Fear' message.

There are significant risks associated with the use of fireworks. Even sparklers can cause serious injury if not used sensibly, and every year injuries are caused through people not handling fireworks properly. Do not take unnecessary risks with fireworks; think of the consequences.

It is important to remember that fireworks can be noisy, frightening and potentially lethal and that pets can be particularly affected.

For those people wishing to enjoy themselves, we would encourage them to take advantage of organised fireworks displays.

Parents and organisations are advised to only buy fireworks marked on the pack with BS7114 and to always buy from retail premises, which are registered by the local authority.

Under the Fireworks Legislation Act 2004, it is now illegal to release fireworks between 11 pm and 7 am, with exceptions on specific days of the year such as November 5, when the curfew is between 12 midnight and 7 am. Anyone caught breaking the curfew could receive a fine of up to £5,000 and/or up to six months imprisonment.

Any person who is offered fireworks from an unusual source should contact their local trading standard office, police station or fire station.

Richard Smith, Chief Fire Officer of the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, commented: "Bonfire Night should be a fun evening for friends and family. Sadly, however, many are injured and even killed each year as a result of the careless use of fireworks. The best way to enjoy the celebrations is by attending properly organised events. Details of organised events are available from your local council."

Inspector Alan Millichip said: "While we wish for people to enjoy themselves, we will take a firm stance on anti-social behaviour associated with the misuse of fireworks.

"Anti-social behaviour effects all our communities, including our most vulnerable residents, and we urge people to stay safe and ensure everyone has an enjoyable Bonfire Night."

A specially produced DVD entitled 'Fun not Fear' highlights the dangers of misusing fireworks.

As part of the Not in My Neighbourhood Week activity, the DVD will be shown to pupils in schools throughout the force area.
