At St. Mary’s Church last Thursday, the audience attending the Tenby Male Choir concert gave 12-year-old Elizabeth Morgan a standing ovation.

The local talented pianist, who attends Greenhill School and who was the Open winner at the Valero Pembrokeshire Secondary School Music Festival in 2018, thrilled and delighted the audience with her superb performance.

Tenby Male Choir has a tradition of offering young local talented musicians a chance to perform at their concerts and on this occasion the youngster gave a flawless rendition of Je Te Veux by Satie and then followed this up with Impromptu Op 90 No.4 by Schubert.

Elizabeth has virtually become a family member of the Tenby Male Choir, bearing in mind that she started playing at their concerts when only eight years old.

The choir also pleased the visitors when singing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and especially African Prayer in which the members need to learn three different languages.

African Prayer was first composed in 1897; it was adopted 100 years later as the national anthem for South Africa. Tenby Male Choir sang the lovely Calm is the Sea, but had the audience in fits of laughter with My Grandfather’s Clock.

Y

oung Elizabeth Morgan returned to give a wonderful performance of Wedding Day in Troldhaugen Op.65 by Edvard Grieg. What some people may find interesting is to know that the composer’s grandfather came originally from Aberdeen in Scotland and had a surname of Greig.

Following years of trading along the Norwegian coast, he settled in Bergen and reversed the letters in his name to Grieg. Elizabeth then delighted the audience with a stunning performance of Impromptu Op 90 No.2 by Schubert.

Kevin and John gave excellent solo spots to enhance the singing of Working Man which is always well received by the visitors who appreciate the importance of coal mining in this part of West Wales.

All the proceeds from the concert went to support First Responders who were represented at the door by Angharad Hodgson and Craig Sutton.

The choir have their own defibrillator and received training from the organisation with regards to how to use it in an emergency.

The next concert for Tenby Male Choir is during the Tenby Arts Festival on Thursday, September 26, at St. Mary’s Church when the solo spot is being taken by local talented Carys Underwood playing the marimba.
