There was a good attendance at the afternoon meeting on November 7 in Church House. Enrolling member Ellen welcomed everyone and gave a special mention to Mrs. Vida Badham, who was present after a stay in hospital. Everyone was pleased to see her back with them once again. The guest speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. Kay Rook, whose topic was 'A taste of Japan'. Mrs. Rook had spent four years in the rural south of Japan. During that time she taught English and was also involved in cultural studies working with the Noh Theatre. Mrs. Rook had brought along many Japanese artefacts and members were invited to examine these and to attempt to guess what they were and their use. Some of the articles on display included: dried fish, chopsticks, green tea, a sakki cup, a lunch box, Japanese paper and a beautiful kimono. The afternoon was fun and most interesting. Mrs. Joy Griffiths thanked Kay for a very different afternoon and for telling about some of the customs and way of life in rural Japan. The next meeting is on November 21 at 7 pm - a quiz, while a Christmas Lunch will be held at Carringtons on December 5 - names and monies to be given to Mrs. Joy Griffiths.
