An atmospheric and uplifting service to mark the opening of the 23rd Tenby Arts Festival, along with a special celebration of Dr. John Harrison's 40 years as organist and director of music at St. Mary's took place last Sunday, September 21. Dr. John took up his position as director of music in the autumn of 1974 and the guest preacher at the Sung Eucharist was the minister who held the position of curate for several years from 1975, the Very Reverend Jonathan Lean, Dean of St. David's. The 80th anniversaries of the composers Elgar, Holst and William Mathias were also marked by much of the music performed throughout the service. Dr. John was warmly congratulated by Rector Andrew, who spoke with admiration and respect about the enormous contribution made to the musical life of the benefice by Dr. John. In his sermon, based on the significance of music in our worship and devotion to God, Revd Lean further enlightened the congregation concerning the dedication and enthusiasm of Dr. John over the past forty years. Gifts to mark this celebration of 40 wonderful years of service were made to Dr. John, along with a moving tribute in the form of a collaborative poem, presented by the children of the Sunday Funday club. Many inspiring musical performances were given in honour of this event and we are indebted to the following for their contributions; St. Mary's Church Choir, St. Mary's Tenby Handbell Ringers, AMA Trio, Andrew Cusworth, Corey Morris, Judy Davies and, of course, John Harrison. Following the service, the congregation were able to congratulate Dr. John and share in celebratory refreshments, prepared and served by the indomitable Soupermen. A magnificent and delicious anniversary cake, expertly created by chorister, Lindy Wainwright, was a perfect ending to a morning of majestic, musical magic.
