On Sunday, St. Johns was pleased to welcome the Rev. William Owen from Fishguard. The choir sang a song of praise and then Dylan, of the junior church, welcomed everyone.

After the first hymn, 'Ye holy angels bright', the Rev. Owen asked the young people if they had noticed the wind vanes on top of buildings. In Fishguard there was one in the shape of a fish, but on top of the Royal Exchange, in London, was a very special one shaped like a grasshopper. One story about this was that of a young boy many years ago trying to catch grasshoppers on his way home and he followed the creature into a field where he saw a bundle of clothes wrapped around a baby. The parents could not be found, so the baby was adopted by his mother and grew up to be Sir Thomas Gresham, founder of the Royal Exchange.

After the children had left for their classes, Mrs. Eluned Brown read from Jeremiah, chapter 18, verses 1-12.

The Rev. Owen said that the church needs a prophetic ministry. When we look at Jeremiah, we see that he was a prophet who knew about today. Even then people were asking the same questions we do: "Where is God and what does his message mean."

What we have is an invitation to visit the potter's house; see the works of the Lord; see the world forming in his hands and man framed by them. The Lord says go to the potter's house and there I will teach you my work. A potter's first act is to centre the clay on the wheel. Our ancestors thought man was at the centre of the universe, but scientists have changed those ideas.

God is so big in the vastness of creation and yet he takes an interest in each one of us.

We admire craftsmen. Jeremiah admired the potter for his patience, for if he did not succeed in what he wanted to make, he just tried again. The Great Potter does not throw the clay away. He tries again. The Divine Potter says that He can see an angel or the image of His son in each one of us.

After the singing of the final hymn, all present said the grace.

Many thanks go to the Rev. Owen for his interpretation of the bible reading and also thanks to all others who took part in the service.

This Sunday's service, at 11 am, will include holy communion, and will be conducted by the Rev. Nanette Lewis Head. It will be Harvest Festival and will be followed by a Faith Lunch, to which all are welcome.
