The Rev. David Hammond led worship on what is traditionally known as 'Sea Sunday' in many churches, when prayers are said for the men and women who spend their lives at sea.
After the singing group, accompanied by Mr. Alan Adams, had sung the Introit, Steffan welcomed everyone with the words, "Lord, you have chosen each one of us to be here at this place, help us to see more clearly how you want to use each one of us for your work."
Mrs. Liz Storey read the notices, which included a card from Audrey and Tony Scullard, thanking everyone for the fellowship and kindness shown to them during the 12 years they had spent at St. Johns. They will shortly be moving to Salisbury to be nearer their family. They are wished all the very best in their new home.
The congregational Psalm was Psalm 111.
The Rev. David Hammond spoke to the young people about the importance of seafarers in our lives.
"Nearly 95 per cent of everything we have comes by sea; we are indebted to them for most of our possessions and much of our food," he said.
"In Tenby, we are also aware of the role of the RNLI and the importance of their work in saving lives, but how often do we include them in our prayers?" he asked. This gave the young people something to think about as they left for their own classes.
Mrs. Eluned Brown then read two passagers from the Bible to lead us into the Rev. David Hammond's address.
"Pray without ceasing and in all circumstances," were his opening words. Prayer is as important to God as it is to us. Prayer stimulates and nourishes us, prayer enfolds us. Bearing this in mind, how often do we pray for the seafarers? It is important that we remember the vital part they play in our lives, without them our lives would be impoverished. Let us therefore ask God to teach us to pray for seafarers, and as we rejoice in his love, may God's love also enfold them as they put their lives in danger at sea.
Worship was concluded with the sharing of the grace.
Thanks go to the Rev. David Hammond for sharing with us and making us more aware. We look forward to him being with us again.
This Sunday's worship at 11 am will be led by the Rev. John Potter. Everyone is welcome.
