Sunday's service opened with the choir singing 'Spirit of the living god', accompanied by Mrs. Sheila Noot. Words of welcome were read by Molly of the junior church.
The Rev. John Potter was given a warm welcome and the service started with the hymn 'For the beauty of the earth', followed by prayers and Psalm no 831, 'A song of Christ's glory'.
In his talk to the children, Rev. Potter said that he had been thinking what a lovely day it was; firstly because it was the Lord's day. Since he was a teenager he had loved Sunday and going to church with so many people of different age groups who cared for one another. As love grew, so the church grew. He sensed that at St. Johns there was a lot of love and growth would continue where there was love. Secondly because it was Father's Day.
John then led us in prayer for our earthly fathers.
After the junior church had left for their worship, Mrs. Sue Powell read from Philippians, chapter 2, verse 7-11, and Mark, chapter 4, verses 35-41.
John said he was basing his talk on the reading from Philippians. Many count the Psalm based on this as one of the first Christian songs. He went on to say that the form of God is the essence. Christ is divine. Jesus was not robbing his father by claiming divinity. As we partake of our father's humanity, so Christ Jesus took his father's divinity. He chose to relinquish his glory and privileges which were his by right. No-one made him! He acted voluntarily. He chose instead a manager, a carpenter's shop and a wooden cross. Once he became human he had to learn as we do. Like him we are not meant to be lord and lady, but a human servant. With me renew your trust and love in him.
The service concluded with the choir singing a blessing.
Many thanks go to the Rev. Potter and to all others who took part in the service.
This Sunday's service will be at 11 am and will be conducted by the Rev. Griffiths.
