Worship on Sunday was led by the Rev. Alan Wilcox, a good friend of St. Johns. It is always good to have him with us.
After the singing of the Introit by the choir, accompanied by Mr. Alan Adams, Molly read the young people's welcome. The Rev. Wilcox then thanked Molly and opened worship with a warm welcome to everyone.
"Who is good at maths?" he asked the children, "I'm going to tell you a short story." Using a felt board, Alan illustrated his story of the rich man distributing his camels to his sons. Unable to distribute them evenly, his neighbour came to his rescue and gave him another camel. This enabled him to give his sons the number of camels he had promised and also to return the one he had been given. An amusing story to illustrate neighbourliness.
"God wants us to be neighbours to each other, to love one another and care for each other. This is God's will," he told the young people.
The scripture reading by Mrs. Bron Hurlow was taken from Paul's letter to the Philippians, Chapter 3, verses 1-14, 'The true righteousness'.
Alan's text was taken from the same reading, in the word's of Paul, ". . . the one thing I do, however, is to forget what is behind me and do my best to reach what is ahead."
"Memory has two sides, happy and sad. Sometimes we need to forget the past. We often want to remember our successes and rest on our laurels. Yes," Alan said, "it is good to remember Nanette with affection and all she has achieved, but it is also important that we look forward to the future with anticipation." It is now time for us to capitalise on her legacy.
"In this period of interregnum it is important to forget our fears as to what the future may hold and move forward in faith. May God bless you and your future," Alan concluded.
The congregation then sang the final hymn, 'O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end'.
The Grace was said, and in conclusion, the choir sang the blessing.
Thanks go to the Rev. Alan Wilcox for his words of support and encouragement and also to Molly and Mrs. Bron Hurlow for their contribution to worship.
This Sunday's worship at 11 am will be led by the Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head. This will be her last service as the minister of St. Johns, please come along and share with us, everyone is more than welcome.
