The service on Sunday was arranged by the worship group, and was led by Mrs. Molly Neate. It was a celebration of the success of the Vision4Life course which many of the congregation at St. Johns had been involved with during recent months. During this introductory year to Vision4Life we had been asked to talk to each other about the central areas of our faith, the Bible, Prayer and Evangelism. Sunday's service highlighted some of these shared experiences.
The choir began by singing the Introit, accompanied by Mrs. Pat Stubbs, followed by the great hymn of faith, 'Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord!'.
The first Advent candle in preparation for Christmas was lit by Steffan, Gwen and Paul Fyfield.
After the children left for their own worship, Janet Drogan gave a short introduction to Vision4Life.
Introducing the Bible element, Connor Bridge read a modern version of Psalm 136, reminding us of God's faithfulness during times of danger, need and doubt. This was followed by a short talk by Mrs. Gwen Nicholl on her own Bible experience. She recalled her first introduction to the Bible and the impact it had on her life as a child. The congregation then sang the hymn 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind'.
Using a single red rose and circles of black steel, Mrs. Ann Maggs gave a moving floral demonstration of the 'power of prayer' and God's love encircling us, after which John Couzens talked of his prayer experiences.
Mrs. Melanie Walker read from Matthew, Chapter 6, verses 7-14, and then as she recited a short meditation, Mr. Jim Walker played 'Sarabande' from Bach C Minor Unaccompanied Suite. The section on prayer concluded with the choir singing 'The Lord's prayer'.
Mrs. Liz Storey and Mr. Lew Day's colourful dramatisation of the story of 'The Woman of Samaria', highlighted evangelism and led the congregation into the singing of the hymn, 'Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart'.
Advent 2008 brings the start of the first part of our Vision4Life process. The gauntlet for Vision4Life at St. Johns has been thrown down. The next step on our journey will be a gathering to share dreams and strategies for putting them into action. Come join us, as we go forward in faith. The final hymn was 'God's spirit is in the air'.
In conclusion, Mrs. Mollie Neate thanked all those who had contributed to a very moving and positive morning's worship. In telling our faith stories, we are able to empathise with one another and are brought closer together.
The Grace was shared and the choir sang the blessing.
This Sunday's worship at 11 am will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion and will be led by the Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head. All are welcome.
A reminder that on Wednesday, December 10, the Christmas Fair and Coffee Morning will be held at St. Johns. Please come along.
