After the introit, sung by the choir accompanied by Alan Adams, words of welcome were read by Stefan of the junior church. The Rev. Nanette Lewis Head then welcomed everyone in her own words.
The opening hymn was sung and Nanette asked the congregation if they had ever said, "It's not fair". Most people said that they had, but were told that God has given us the wonderful gift of being able to choose.
When the young people had left for their service, Graham Powell read from Exodus chapter 16, verses 2-16, and Matthew chapter 20, verses 1-16.
Nanette talked about God's grace which challenges us to live by His will. Who would be the first to be picked in Jesus' story of the workers in the vineyard? It would probably be the strongest and fittest, then the second choice might be widows and disabled and the ones left were the least able to work. Did Jesus tell the story because the vulnerable were favoured, for all went home with a day's pay.
There are those in our world who do not know where their next meal is coming from. Jesus' lesson is that 'what is fair and what is just is established by God'. All of us regardless of how long we have lived with the knowledge of God's goodness are equal in his eyes. One person cannot have more than another. He makes covenants in which he gives everything and asks for everything in return.
God is out in the market place looking for people. The parable is an invitation to come and receive God's mercy and grace. God loves us; which is the end of the story, but also the beginning of a brand new one.
After prayers of intercession, the final hymn, 'Crown Him with many crowns', was sung and the service concluded with the saying of the grace by all present.
Many thanks go to Nanette, for her thoughtful message, and also all others taking part in the service.
This Sunday's worship will be conducted by the Rev. Norman Gilbert and will commence at 11 am. All are welcome to attend.
