The service on the Feast of Pentecost was taken by the minister, Rev. Nanette Lewis Head. The service was opened by the choir, accompanied by Pat Stubbs on the organ, followed by Conor Bridges reading the words of welcome. All joined in with the wonderful hymn 'When morning guilds the skies'. Nanette asked the young people if they knew what Alka-Seltzer was and did they know what happened when a tablet was put in a balloon with a little water and it was then blown up. A lot of noise and fizzing occurred and that was reminiscent of Pentecost. After the young people had left for their service, Mrs. Eluned Brown read from Acts chapter 2 verses 1-6 and 1st Corinthians chapter 12 verses 4-13. In her talk, Nanette said that if she had come into the church uncertain what to say, the flower arrangement by the communion table would have said it all and she thanked Ann Maggs for it. She went on to talk about Jesus' appearance, to the disciples, in a locked room and what happened was a foretaste of a promise. When the spirit came they would know that it came from Jesus. This scripture tells us that Good Friday and Pentecost belong together. When we pray for the spirit, for instance at Baptism and Communion, we are asking for a fresh contact with the crucified Lord. Pentecost is a word with a particular meaning. Luke says that it is important that we are out there in the wind and flames. He was trying to explain how a small group of mainly uneducated people became a living force. Sometimes the spirit comes quietly. The Spirit of God can come to anyone and speak through them. Let us celebrate the Spirits presence which is with each one of us. Come Holy Spirit come, God is challenging each one of us. We are a bit like a jig-saw puzzle with each person necessary for the whole. There followed the prayers of intercession, concluding with the words 'Come Holy Spirit. Do not be afraid, for I am with you'. The congregation sang the last hymn and the choir sang the Benediction. The words of the grace were said by all. Thank you, Nanette, and all others who took part in the service. This Sunday's service will be at 11 am and will be conducted by the minister, Rev. Nanette Lewis Head. Everyone is most welcome to attend.
