Worship on Sunday was led by the Rev. Nanette Lewis Head, who thanked Thomas Dunlop, one of the young people, for reading the words of welcome. She also thanked the music group for opening worship and for the contribution that they make each week. She said that it was good to have Marion and Derek Griffiths back with them after their visit to New Zealand. After she had expressed her own words of welcome to all, Nanette said that the theme of worship would be the baptism of Jesus. She spoke of this in her talk to the young people. To illustrate her thoughts based on the words, 'This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased', she talked about a three-legged race (rare these days because of health and safety) and of the qualities needed to take part, team work, co- operation with, and support of each other. Three-legged, the simple illustration of the trinity, three working as one, God the father, the son and holy spirit. The Bible readings were Psalm 27, 'The Lord is my light and my salvation', read by the congregation. Isaiah 42, 1-9, 'The Lord's servant', and Mathew 3, 1-17, 'The preaching of John the Baptist', read by Mr. Graham Powell. The main thrust of Nanette's sermon was based upon the reading from St. Mathew's gospel, particularly the words quoted to the children. God said of Jesus, at the outset of his ministry, that he was pleased with him. God speaks these words to us. We as his children can recieve this affection for ourselves. We do not earn God's approval, it is freely given. The joy of baptism, whether as a child or on confession of faith, is that we celebrate God's love for us, which is unconditional. We need to remember who we are and to turn to him. Prayers of intercession preceded the closing hymn, 'Crown him with many crowns'. Thanks go to Nanette, the singing group, Alan Adams as organist, also Thomas and Graham. This Sunday at 11 am, all are welcome to worship, which will again be led by Nanette.
