After the introit, sung by the choir accompanied by Mr. Alan Adams on the organ, Rachel Bonser read the call to worship. Mr. Tony Scullard welcomed Mr. Richard Laws, who was to lead in worship, on behalf of the congregation. The opening hymn was 'Praise my soul, the King of Heaven' and then Richard talked to the young people about a visit he made recently to Burton- on-Trent when he picked up what he thought was a £10 note, only to find that the rear had printed on it 'All the fun of the fair'. He talked of 'tricks and treats' and said that that was a harmless trick and he had a treat finding the only open parking space in the town centre. When the children had left for their service, Mrs. Gwen Nicholl read from Colossians, chapter 1, verses 15-23, and Matthew, chapter 10, verses 26 -33. In his address, Richard took Colossians chapter 1 v15 for his text. He enlarged on the theme by talking of Adam and Eve and their giving in to temptation; then throwing the blame on others. This was the beginning of inquisitiveness. Their punishment was to be thrown out of Eden where man had to cultivate crops in the wilderness and woman suffer the pain of pregnancy and birth and the snake to spend his life crawling on his belly. Truth and trust are relationships which must be built on. Physical desires are the rulers of our lives. We are like Eve wondering what lies behind the forbidden fruit. Eternity is what God wants for us, but the choice is up to us. Do not reject Him. We cannot hide from God. The final hymn was 'I will sing the wondrous story of the Christ who died for me', after which the grace was said to each other and the choir concluded the service by singing a benediction. Many thanks go to Richard Laws for his leadership. Thanks also go to all others who took part in the service. This Sunday's service will be at 11 am, led by the minister, Rev. Nanette Lewis Head, and will include holy communion. All are most welcome to attend.
