After the Introit sung by the choir, the minister, Rev. Nanette Lewis Head, welcomed everyone to the Remembrance Day service. The opening hymn was 'O God our help in ages past'. The psalm for the day was number 146, which tells of God's care for all of us in all circumstances. Nanette's talk to the children was of the meaning of the poppy wreath, the petals representing the flowers on Flanders field. After the children left for junior church, Mrs. Margaret Day read from 1 Kings chapter 17 v 6-16 and Mark chapter 12 v 38-44. The poppy wreath was then laid and the minister read the dedication. A poem entitled 'Tears of Victory', which spoke of the joy of victory, but also the pain of loss, was read by Mrs. Marian Griffiths. In her address, Nanette talked about remembrance - but who do we remember! Those who were killed or injured; but the widows, children, parents and friends also gave their day for our tomorrow. What have we learned from such a sacrifice? Will we never learn and what can we do? Work for peace. Memories of the past are our link with the future. We have to remember as remembrance brings hope and they gave their today to ensure the future of generations to come. After the final hymn, the choir sang a blessing. Thank you, Nanette, and all who took part in the service. The service this Sunday will be at 10.30 am and will be conducted by the Rev. N. Lewis Head.
