Last Sunday, Bible Sunday, the Holy Eucharist service was celebrated by the Rev. Patricia Campion. The readings were from Deuteronomy Ch 34, 1-12, Thessalonians Ch 2, 1-8 and the Holy Gospel, Matthew Ch 22, 34-46.

The Rev. Tricia opened her sermon by asking why do we have Bible Sunday? There are various theories, but nobody seems to know. How many read the Bible daily? Again nobody really knows. With the changes in the appointed readings each week and year, most of the Bible is now read at some time in church. T

Sunday's Old Testament reading told of the death of Moses, at a great age, just after he reached the promised land, the New Testament reading of Paul's ministry in the Thessalonians which encouraged the new church, and Matthew's glorious Gospel which refers back to Moses the law and the prophets and the two great commandments, 'Love the Lord your God' and 'love your neighbour as yourself'; these are the basis of our Christian life today.

Rev. Tricia said the Bible was an enormous book. Whilst the Old Testament told the story of creation and history of the Jewish nation, the New Testament tells the story of Jesus and the early Church and ends with the amazing book of Revelations.

Where should we start to read? She suggested a modern version of the Bible is easier to understand. Start with St. Luke, Acts, and the epistles and then approach the Old Testament with more understanding.

Thanks go to the Rev. Tricia for a thought-provoking service.
