St. Florence Cricket Club celebrated its inaugural annual award dinner on Saturday, November 9, at Greenhills Hotel, St. Florence. All enjoyed a wonderful meal provided by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Collier and their staff in superb surroundings, before sitting back to enjoy the more formal part of the evening.
Chairman Keith Nixon welcomed all to the club's first celebratory dinner and thanked all those who had made the club such a success in their first year. In particular, he thanked sponsors such as Texaco, Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions Club, St. Florence Community Council, SportLot and the committee of the former club.
He also commended those who had prepared the pitches under the guidance of Haydn Bateman, scorer Alan Adams and umpires Tony Watkins and Colin Williams and, of course, those who had provided teas on match days.
Keith went on to commend the team under captain Tommy Roberts who had managed to win Division Six South of the Pembroke County Cricket League at their first attempt and with one match to spare. He looked forward to the future and the development of junior and ladies teams.
However, to realise these aims the club will need to develop their practice facilities and purchase further equipment for which they will need further sponsorship to help the club obtain the necessary grants.
The club were then regaled with an entertaining speech by Phillip Thomas, chairman of Pembroke County Cricket Club. Phillip recalled past successes of the former club and its players and commended the new club for their fine start in the Pembroke County League.
He interspersed his serious points about the need to develop young players and the difficulties that the league had faced in his first year as chairman with a series of amusing anecdotes which were well received by his appreciative audience.
Phillip then proposed a toast to St. Florence Cricket Club.
Phillip kindly agreed to make the annual awards to St. Florence players as follows: league batting average - Barry Wolverson; league bowling average - Ben McDonnell; highest score - Steve Hughes; best league bowling - Ben McDonnell; total league runs - Steve Hughes; total league wickets - Tommy Roberts; total league catches - Malcolm Ruff; league all-rounder - Tommy Roberts.
The chairman's award was announced by Keith Nixon for the individual who had contributed significantly to the success of the club. He nominated Keith Woods for his superb performances with bat and ball and his influence on younger players.
The evening finished with yet another successful raffle by Des Marsh for club funds, before everyone migrated to the bar where the highs and lows of the year were re-lived.
