Saundersfoot celebrated St. David's Day in style at the weekend with the sixth St. David's Day Food and Craft Festival.

Over 6,000 people attended the festival which featured two-dozen stalls packed with all things Welsh in the village's heated harbourside marquee, and celebrity chef cookery demonstrations, plus the Cawl Cooking Championship of the World... and Elsewhere.

The two-day event, which attracted large crowds, saw 225 people embarking on the nine-stop cawl trail on Saturday. They each paid £4 for a commemorative bowl - made by Pembrokeshire potter Mark Walford, of Hilton Court, Roch - and toured eating establishments in the village for generous free cawl samples, together with bread and cheese, before casting their votes.

Participating were the Marina, Captain's Table, Jan'z at Philly's, the Gower Hotel, Royal Oak, Hean, Silver Strand Tearoom, Chemist Inn and The Mermaid on The Strand.

The winners were The Mermaid On The Strand, whose culinary team had spent all week cooking up their traditional lamb-based cawl to a secret recipe.

The Mermaid beat previous winners The Chemist Inn and Silver Strand Tearoom into second and third place.

Said head chef of The Mermaid, Kate Walker: "We were the first to get our names on the trophy in 2003, so we're delighted to win once again."

The festival, organised by Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism, attracted thousands of people who enjoyed buying and tasting food and browsing crafts in a heated marquee on the seafront, as well as enjoying demonstrations by celebrity Welsh chefs, Hazel Thomas and Anthony Evans.

Chamber chairman Andrew Evans described the weekend as 'fantastic'.

"The festival brought a lot of visitors and goodwill into the village on what would otherwise be a quiet period," he said.

"Everything was a huge success, and the demand now is for an event even bigger and better."
