On Saturday, the Rom'e Windows sponsored 1st XI travelled to St. Ishmaels in the Senior Cup, expecting a difficult match, as Tish were last year's second division league champions and are currently lying in mid-table in division two.

Saundersfoot travelled with a near full strength squad, with manager Phil Jones and striker Steve Davies back after last week's 5-0 win in the West Wales Cup.

Reverting to a 4-4-2 formation, Jones left himself out of the starting line-up and fitted Steve Davies into an attacking wide right-hand side role from midfield.

Robbie Beynon is now playing as the front target man, flanked by striker Paul Evans, fresh from his summer football with a few mates travelling all over the UK and Europe.

Evans was the tournament top goal scorer, with hat-tricks against England, Scotland and Belgium, the winning goal against Ireland, and also netted against Holland.

He is hoping to be club top scorer, but Steve Davies is pushing him all the way and currently they have 27 between them.

New signing Steve Ruff has pushed into the first team after some good performances with the second team and now forms a middle partnership with Russell Evans as the backbone of midfield. This leaves Darren Umanee free on the left to link up with Evans.

Saundersfoot's four-man defence now has Simon Brace sweeping behind Peter Rattenbury, with both fullbacks Andy Hughes and Paul Thomas being very quick, enabling them to get up and back to help out in midfield. This gives cover to goalkeeper Craig Reardon, who must now be one of the best young 'keepers in the county.

This team knew it would be tough travelling to Tish, but the management team of Phil Jones and Johnny Watkins must have been surprised at the performance of Saundersfoot as they ran out 6-1 winners.

Going into half-time 2-0 up, with a goal apiece for Paul Evans and Darren Umanee, Saundersfoot knew that Tish would have to come at them after the change around.

This they did, but the back four soaked up everything that Tish threw at them, with goalkeeper Craig Reardon in top form with some marvellous saves.

And with Paul Evans and Steve Davies feeding off Rob Beynon on the counter breaks, Saundersfoot hit back with more goals in the second half, with Tish getting one back near the end.

Both Evans and Davies got a brace each, with Evans claiming a hat-trick to match the one he got last week.

Near the end of the game, Phil Jones and Sam Reeves came on for 10 minutes, replacing some tired legs.

This must have been Saundersfoot's best result for four years, but now it is back to the league this Saturday with a home game against Clarbeston Road.

CALLED OFF

The SSSC sponsored 2nd XI were due to play Pendine at home on Saturday and with the ground conditions near perfect and with a squad of 20 players to choose from, the management duo of Andrew Spencer and Barry Phillips were keen to get three points in the bag from a team currently bottom of the division.

After a fruitless trip the week before against a strong Camrose outfit, changes were going to be made, but Pendine were unable to field a side and the game was called off.

Saundersfoot now have to travel to play Narberth this Saturday, a team currently near the top of the table.

UNDER 16s

Saundersfoot Under 16s, who were unbeaten before Saturday and sitting in second spot in the table, came up against a strong St. Clears outfit who were able to compete in sticky conditions better than the Saundersfoot outfit.

Trying to play a passing game, which has helped the Seasiders win two and draw two this season, they found it increasingly difficult as the pitch got heavier and heavier.

This allowed the St. Clears team to press forward and eventually end up 4-0 winners.

After this game, Saundersfoot could drop a place to third, but the management hopes that they have learned to cope with not so favourable conditions.

LADIES

Saundersfoot Ladies did not have a fixture on Sunday, but two of the team were selected to play for the Pembrokeshire county squad against a team from Cardiff.

The fixture was at Saundersfoot in glorious sunshine and again perfect ground conditions for flowing football.

In attendance were several WFA officials, including the president, Des Shanklin, Gerry Rigby and Alan Evans.

Both girls played well in a strong Pembrokeshire side which ran out 4-1 winners.

Saundersfoot AFC was proud to host the Pembrokeshire Ladies, and hope that they will play more games at the King George V playing fields, particularly as new club facilities are being built this winter, starting after Christmas.
