A mother from Haverfordwest gave her son a weekend to remember after winning a pair of tickets to Wales’ opening match in the Six Nations tournament.

Lisa Willington, 43, entered Principality Building Society’s competition offering rugby lovers the chance to join the 74,500-strong crowd on Saturday at the sold out Wales v Scotland match at Principality Stadium.

Principality’s ‘rugby buddy’ competition called for Facebook users to nominate a deserving friend or family member that they would usually watch the Six Nations with at home, resulting in Lisa bagging tickets for her son Seth, 12, and husband Jon, 50.

Avid sports player Seth, who’s part of a local rugby and football club and plays cricket for Pembrokeshire, previously won tickets at school for Wales’ autumn series match against Georgia for 10 of his rugby team. But due to illnesses within his football team on the day of the game and not wanting to leave his club short of players, Seth decided to give the tickets to another local team instead. On seeing the ‘rugby buddy’ competition, his mum Lisa thought he was more than deserving of a ticket to Wales v Scotland.

Seth watched the match with his dad Jon which saw Wales win 34-7 in a thrilling four-try victory over Scotland.

Lisa said: “I know it’s a cliché, but I honestly have never won a competition before, so when I found out I’d been given the tickets, I had to ask my husband to check it was real. Seth loves sport, so I spend my weekends driving him from match to match, so it was a change of pace for him to sit and watch a game for once. It was such a wonderful treat for him and his dad thanks to Principality.”

Julie-Ann Haines, chief customer officer at Principality Building Society, said: “Wales is a nation of proud rugby supporters and we know many family bonds are founded on a shared passion for the sport, which is evident in the Willington family. We’re so happy we were able to give tickets away to such big rugby supporters and glad they got to experience a Welsh winning atmosphere at Principality Stadium.”
