Saundersfoot Sports Club regrets to announce that, due to recent heavy rainfall, the village sports field is currently too wet to safely accommodate parking for the Saundersfoot Triathlon on Friday, September 19.
In previous years, the club has been proud to support the event by providing parking facilities, with more than 400 cars accommodated last year.
This has not only assisted the smooth running of the event but has also generated vital funds for the club.
The income raised from parking directly supports the village’s cricket and football teams as well as the ongoing maintenance of the facilities.
County Councillor Chris Williams said: “The club is bitterly disappointed not to be able to assist this year, but it would be irresponsible to risk damaging the pitches in their current condition. Saundersfoot Sports Field is home to two senior teams and numerous junior sides who will rely on the pitches throughout the winter season.
“Protecting the playing surface is essential to ensuring that these teams can continue to train and compete.
“Despite this setback, Saundersfoot Sports Club extends its best wishes to event organisers, all athletes taking part in the Saundersfoot Triathlon and to those competing in the Ironman event on Sunday,” he added.
Saundersfoot Triathlon - described as one of the ‘most uplifting and community-spirited days’ in the seaside village’s calendar is set to take place this Friday.
Taking place just two days before Ironman Wales, the Saundersfoot Tri will be held on September 19, bringing an early taste of triathlon fever to the village.
The action begins at 5pm, when swimmers set off from the main slipway onto Saundersfoot beach.
From there, competitors will take on a scenic bike ride along the county’s winding roads, surrounded by spectacular coastal and countryside views, before finishing with a run through Coppet Hall and into the heart of the village.
Road closures for the event are as follows:
• The Strand – entire length: 4 to 8pm
• Wogan Terrace – entire length: 4.30 to 8pm
• High Street – from junction with Church Street to junction with The Strand: 4.30 to 8pm
• Cambrian Place – entire length: 4.30 to 8pm
• Frances Lane – from junction with Church Terrace to junction with Wogan Terrace: 4.30 to 8pm
• Church Street – entire length: 4.30 to 8pm
• Milford Street – entire length: 4.30 to 8pm
Cllr Williams said of the event: “It’s not just the race that makes the day so memorable. From morning to night, the village is alive with energy, locals and visitors line the streets, cheering every athlete, while independent hospitality venues spill out onto pavements with live music, food, and drink, adding to the electric atmosphere!
“Last year, Saundersfoot was packed with families, friends, and supporters, creating a wall of sound and a wave of encouragement that carried competitors all the way to the finish.
“All signs point to an equally, if not more, vibrant turnout this year, making the Saundersfoot Tri not only a thrilling sporting event but one of the most uplifting and community-spirited days in the village calendar.”
