Over 200 youngsters stepped into the spotlight last weekend to celebrate Hallowe'en.

Dancers from across the county competed for trophies at the annual Pembrokeshire Leisure Dance Competition and Hallowe'en Fancy Dress Fun Day. Prizes were awarded to the top three in five styles of dance - Free Style, Classical, Modern Sequence, Ballroom and Latin - as well as to the most up- and-coming dancers.

The overall trophy winner for all five sections was Jorgie Hardwood-May, while the up-and-coming new dancers in each of the five sections were:

Freestyle - Leah Drake; Classical - Shannon Jenkins; Modern Sequence - Paul Brockway; Ballroom - Dylan Allen; Latin -Emily Lloyd.

The Hallowe'en fancy dress prizes went to: Eight years and under: 1. Jorgie Hardway-May; 2. Ewan Henderson; 3. Jamilla Castle.

Nine-12 years: 1. Amy McGregor; 2. Sarah Davies; 3. Harriet Hardwood-May.

Thirteen-15 years: 1. Rebecca Williams; 2. Caitlin Percy; 3. Emma Hart/Gaynor Jeffries.

Sixteen years and above: 1. Nelum Withanage; 2. Maria Fullagar; 3. Verity Chapman.

The competition was held at the Milford Leisure Centre on Sunday following a successful inaugural competition last year.

The adjudicators for the dance sections were Ray Wheeler and Suzanne Blake from Somerset, while Clr. Rob Lewis, Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for leisure, and his wife Elaine, judged the fancy dress competition. Clr. Rob Lewis said five-million people throughout Britain danced in one form or another every week. "Dancing offers a superb experience as entertainment, as a pastime, as a sport and as an exercise," he said. "Beyond that, it is also great fun."

The well-established Pembrokeshire Leisure School of Dance operates at several leisure centres across the county offering a variety of classes for all levels, ages and abilities. Qualified teachers show pupils how to dance as well as giving encouragement and boosting confidence.
