Sylvia Howells lived on The Strand in Saundersfoot for many years. She was an artist who was well known throughout the area for her landscape paintings, but sadly died last year.
When her family were faced with the task of reorganising Sylvia's belongings, they found her studio full of painting materials - paint, brushes, canvases, books and more - which they did not have any use for themselves and felt they would like to pass on to someone who could make good use of them.
They approached Art Matters Gallery to see if a suitable recipient could be found.
At the gallery, the sixth Tenby Open Art Competition was fast approaching and, from the entrants, an appropriate person was sought, preferably a student or other young person who was painting landscapes in oil or acrylic and would make good use of the valuable collection of materials that Sylvia had gathered.
That person was Elizabeth Pickford from Pembroke, currently in her final year of an art degree course in Carmarthen and painting some excellent coastal landscapes, two of which had been selected and awarded highly commended by the competition judges.
Elizabeth is seen here receiving the Sylvia Howells Memorial Prize from Carol Davies, Sylvia's daughter (also in the picture is Carol's husband, Gwilym).
