This month’s Spanjazz presents an incredible evening with ‘One of our most able and listenable pianist/composers’, Dave Jones and his Quartet, on Thursday, May 17, at the Plas Hyfryd Hotel, Narberth.
Wales has produced some fine pianists from Dill Jones to Geoff Eales and Spanjazz now welcome another one, Dave Jones, who was here last year with the extraordinary Khamira with Tomos Williams.
A successful composer for film and TV as well as a top jazz pianist, Dave’s playing has been likened by Jazzwise Magazine to that of the legendary McCoy Tyner in its ‘muscular, rolling intensity’ and by London Jazz News as ‘unfailingly dynamic and driving, with light, shade and nuance injecting moments of poetry and reflection.’
Also featured in Dave’s quartet will be dynamic Bristol-based saxophonist Ben Waghorn who played early in his career with Tommy Chase’s memorable hard bop band and later playing in many other musical contexts - for example with Portishead and Goldfrapp. The rhythm section will be the fine team of bassist Ashley John Long and drummer Lloyd Haines.
Span Arts’ long-running jazz monthly takes place in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere at the wonderful Plas Hyfryd Hotel, Narberth. With real ales, a meal available and great foot-tapping music, this venue is the perfect environment for this exceptional event.
