This weekend the incredible and internationally acclaimed hip-hop artist, Akua Naru and her band, are flying in all the way from the USA to perform at the Queen’s Hall, Narberth, on Saturday.
Hailing from New Haven, Connecticut - a racially divided city battling rising unemployment and violent crime - Naru grew up immersed within a world of black female leaders from African American musical traditions. This, along with the hip-hop records which her uncle, an aspiring producer at the time, brought her have helped Naru develop and establish her unique sound of jazz, soul and hip-hop.
Naru’s latest album ‘The Miner’s Canary’ (February 2015) has been met with many positive reviews. Recorded live over a two-year period, it boasts an amazing cast of accomplished featured artists. Musicians such as Cody Chesnutt, Christian Scott, Ben L’oncle Soul, and Fetsum, to name a few, can be heard on this fantastic new album.
Her consistently political and insightful lyrics - coupled with her ability to integrate historical narratives into her mix of hip-hop, blues and soul music, has also drawn the attention of scholars and activists around the globe.
Not just for fans of hip-hop, Akua Naru’s powerful historical poetry will be backed by a fantastic band and scratch DJ. This really is an unmissable event!
