Last Tuesday (January 25) our ladies team was successful in beating Trefloyne ladies in the first round of the annual national Mail on Sunday Classic. We were able to choose our five ladies for the team, but unfortunately could not choose the weather, which was very wet and windy.

It was a nail-biting match, which was halved after all matches were played, so a sudden death play-off was needed to decide the winners. That part fell onto the very capable shoulders of Ros Williams for South Pembs. and Ann Dassen, of Trefloyne. Ros had earlier lost her match against Ann Dassen, who was playing some cracking golf, according to Ros, so she knew she had to pull something out of the bag to beat her this time. By this time the weather had really closed in and was horrendous.

Unfortunately for Ann, she put her drive out of bounds on the first and had to take three off the tee, which put her on the back foot. Fortunately for Ros, she was able to capitalise and eventually managed to put the ball in the hole (after it had a think about it!) to win the match.

Well done to both girls and commiserations to Trefloyne. Both teams agreed that the match was played with great spirit and enjoyment.

Individual results (South Pembs players first): Sara Davies beat Rita Collins 4/2; Carole Blackwell lost to Anna Hubbard 2/1; Ria Phillips halved with Lind Coward; Lynne Rees beat Pat Fletcher 5/4; Ros Williams lost to Ann Dassen 5/3.

Thanks girls and good luck in the next round!
