Soroptimists continue to help combat Modern Day Slavery.
Last week, SI Tenby’s programme action officer, Dr. Anne Kelly, was delighted to welcome Helida Ramogi to Tenby as part of the club’s ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the heinous crime of human trafficking.
Helida is part of the management team of Bawso - Black and Asian Women Step Out. Bawso is an all Wales, Welsh Government accredited support provider which was established in 1995.
It is a registered charity providing specialist services to people from Black and Ethnic Minority backgrounds that are affected by domestic abuse and other forms of abuse, including female genital mutilation, forced marriage, human trafficking and prostitution. Helida is also the chairperson for the Dyfed Powys Police Forum on Human Trafficking. Dr. Kelly is a representative on the forum for SI Wales South.
SI Tenby recently held a brunch at the Giltar Hotel, with guest speaker Stephen Chapman, the Wales anti-human trafficking co-ordinator. This event raised over £200.
The club also received a donation of £300 from npower in order to help further their campaign against modern day slavery. It was unanimously decided to present this money to Bawso, as one of the first providers in Wales for the victims of human trafficking.
SI Tenby president Eleanor Parker was delighted to present the cheque to Helida. To find out more about SI Tenby’s programme to combat modern day slavery and trafficking, visit their website at http://sigbi.org/tenby
